Brexit negotiators are continuing work in Brussels today after the EU and UK decided to continue trade talks beyond yesterday’s deadline.

Boris Johnson and the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen have promised to “go the extra mile” but how long that is in terms of a timescale remains to be seen.

Hopes a deal could be reached ahead of New Year, when the transition period ends, has boosted the markets.

The EU’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier says however that a deal will only be reached when everything is agreed.

Clare’s Fine Gael TD believes the most recent developments signal a new determination to secure a deal.

Joe Carey says it would be catastrophic for Ireland if Britain crashes out of the EU, but he believes the continuation of the talks is a good sign that an agreement can be struck.
