Clare Government Senator Expresses Concern At Number Of Younger Adults In Nursing Homes

Clare’s Fine Gael Senator is expressing concern about the number of people aged under 65 who are being cared for in nursing homes.

The HSE says more than 1,300 people nationally under pension age are in the facilities, though approximately 85 percent of them are older than 50.

It’s understood work has begun on moving a small number of patients under 65 to alternative facilities in the past number of months.

Speaking at a recent Oireachtas Health committee meeting, Ennistymon-based Senator Martin Conway believes any young adult being based in such a facility is inappropriate.
