Clare government representatives admits flaws surrounding referendum

Clare’s Government representatives admit holding a weekend referendum will have be re looked at given the extremely low voter turnout both here and across the country.

While the constituency recorded one of the highest percentage of yes votes-in the Children Referendum the number of people who actually cast their ballot was only 25, 714 or 32 percent of those eligible to do so.

This is 18 percent less than the numbers recorded for the last Referendum on the Fiscal Treaty earlier this year and turnout for that proposed constitutional change was at its lowest in a decade.

Clare Senator Martin Conway feels asking the public to vote on more than one issue per polling day would help the public greater engage with using their vote.

Meanwhile,

NO campaigners are accusing the government of fooling the people of Ireland with its YES campaign in the Children Referendum.

It’s widely speculated that the outcome will be challenged because of the Supreme Court ruling last Thursday – which found the government’s information campaign was weighted in favour of the YES side.
