A member of the Bar Council of Ireland currently practicing in Clare claims those in the profession are being forced to take unprecedented steps to achieve pay parity.
There are currently over 20 criminal barristers operating in this county who will partake in strike action on October 3rd in a major escalation of a national campaign for fee restoration.
Following cuts imposed after the financial crash of 2008, the fees received by criminal barristers for legal aid cases were heavily reduced and now correspond to 2002 rates in nominal terms.
Clare Barrister Cian Kelly says that the determination of a reasonable fee is crucial to the viability of their service.
