Clare Councillors are demanding action to protect the county’s post offices.

It’s after they heard claims, in a briefing by prominent Independent postmaster Tom O’Callaghan, that up to 20 of Clare’s post offices are facing closure when supports, which are being paid as part of an existing contract, come to an end in July.

The Council is calling for the enactment of a 2016 Dáil Bill, whih includes the introduction of community banking through the post office network.

West Clare Fine Gael Councillor Gabriel Keating says several post offices have already closed in that part of the county, and he says communities need the remaining offices to survive.
