A renowned East Clare author has been appointed Dame for her services to literature.
Tuamgraney native Edna O’Brien, who’s a novelist, playwright, poet and short story writer, has previously won the European Prize for Literature and the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award.

She’s now been made Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, which is the the second-highest rank in Britain’s honour system.
Edna has said it’s an “honour” and an “incentive” at the age of 88 “to keep going”.
