Clare Activist Criticises Over-Reach Of NGOs In Referendum Campaign

A Clare Disability activist insists the democratic role of non-governmental organisations must be reviewed following the state’s landslide defeats in the family and care referenda.

In this county alone, 68% of voters rejected the family amendment, with 74% opposing the carer’s proposal.

Under the McKenna Principles, no lobby group or political party can use taxpayer money to promote a campaign, but through it’s own funds, the National Women’s Council of Ireland confirmed it had over €55,000 to advocate for a yes/yes vote.
