Claims North Clare Losing Bed Nights Due To Dublin Airport Saturation

A North Clare Tourism provider claims a lack of awareness of Shannon Airport from overseas visitors is having a significant impact on the region’s economy.

It follows a new report from the Irish Business and Employer’s Confederation, which shows that 49% of companies are now less confident about their future.

IBEC queried 70 businesses in the experience economy for the survey and while it found that almost half are worried about the future of the sector, seven out of ten firms are concerned about a reduction in tourists from abroad.

Managing Director of the Ailwee Burren Experience, Nuala Mulqueeney says their industry cannot be taken for granted.

According to the CSO, there were 604,500 foreign visitors to Ireland in September, which is a 5% jump on last year, however it found the number of overnight stays had declined.

The Co-Owner of Moher Hill Open Farm and Leisure Park, meanwhile, believes an overreliance on overseas visitors flying into Dublin, rather than Shannon, is a serious problem.

Martin Canavan says Clare is losing far too many bed nights, due to day trippers.
