It’s claimed Ennis’s future is “very bright” following a decision by the local authority to scrap controversial projects planned for the town.
It’s after the council officially removed plans to build on the Abbey Street Carpark and Post Office Field from the County Development Plan.
There were strong indications for some time that proposed projects on the riverside carparks of Abbey Street and Parnell Street along with the planned boardwalk for Ennis Post Office Field would no longer be going ahead, but an amendment made yesterday to Clare’s County Development Plan has confirmed this.
The Abbey Street Development was particularly contentious and triggered several major protests, it would’ve seen a €15m mixed use office and commercial space built on the car park.
The Ennis 2040 DAC is now focusing on affordable housing developments on Francis Street and at Claureen, while also endorsing Primark’s project to build a three storey retail unit on Harmony Row.
Save Ennis Town Spokesperson Cora Hahessy has told Clare FM’s Morning Focus that her group will now be standing down and says she’s satisified with the DAC’s renewed focus on footfall and housing.
The Chairperson of Hands Off Ennis Post Office Field is now hoping his group can play a proactive role in preserving the site as a nature reserve while developing a suitable visitor and information office.
Martin Vernon says they also want assurance the site will be left alone.
