Chief Justice Says Permanent Appeal Court Required

The Chief Justice has called for a referendum on setting up a permanent appeal court to be held to help deal with a huge backlog in cases.

Susan Denham has warned the current four and half year delay in getting Supreme Court appeals heard is unsustainable, untenable and cannot be defended.

Speaking at a law conference in Dublin this morning she said any changes to the courts system should not impinge on the independence of the judiciary.
