Ceremony To Mark 75th Anniversary Of Shannon Construction

It’s 75 years since the development of Shannon Airport got underway.

The sod was turned for the development of Clare’s International airport at Rineanna in October 1936 – and 75 years on, management and staff were present for a tree planting cermony to mark the milestone this week.

An oak sapling was planted near the final roundabout approaching Shannon airport, not far from the spot where 75 years ago this week just over a dozen workers gathered for the first time to begin construction.

Acting Shannon Airport Director Niall MacCarthy said the company was honouring the work of the men who planned and built the airport – commenting that those involved had little idea that the mudflats on the Rineanna Peninsula would quickly become a key airport for transatlantic travel

While construction of Shannon began in 1936 ago, the first passenger flights did not take place until the summer of 1939 and Shannon will celebrate its official 75th birthday in 2014.
