Carrigoran Residents Found To Be At Risk Of Infection Following HIQA Report

Residents of a prominent Clare nursing home were found to be at risk of cross contamination and infection following an inspection by the Health watchdog.

HIQA paid an unannounced visit to Carrigoran House late last October and found it to be non-compliant in four areas.

The inspection took place on October 20th 2025 on a day when Carrigoran House was almost at full capacity with 105 residents in attendance.

Residents were complimentary of staff and were quick to defend them as individuals but were clear they felt there were insufficient numbers of staff on duty each day and night.

The inspection team also noted a number of issues during the visit, with the centre found to be non-compliant in governance and management.

HIQA said the provider had failed to ensure that there were sufficient staffing resources in place to meet current resident care needs, leading to a significant incident where a resident with poor safety awareness left the designated centre unnoticed and unaccompanied.

Carrigoran was also found non-compliant in the areas of incident notification, individual care plans and complaints procedure.

Inspectors also noted, however, that some shared use equipment such as urinals were visibly unclean, which HIQA says created a risk of cross contamination and infection to residents.

Carrigoran House was found non-compliant in four areas of assessment, compliant in another four and substantially compliant in two.

The provider, The Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word has submitted a compliance plan which it set a target of meeting on January 20th.
