Clare Fine Gael TD Joe Carey insists he’ll be backing government plans to abolish town councils, despite local party members urging their Oireachtas members to support a campaign of resistance.
Fine Gael TDs and Senators met with the party’s town and county councillors in Ennis, Shannon, Kilrush and Kilkee for a private meeting in Ennis on Friday where the local representatives outlined the importance of the urban authorities.

They also called on them to support a campaign of resistance against the cuts – which may include a protest to the Dáil or Aras an Uachtaráin
However Deputy Carey believes Minister Phil Hogan’s plans are a necessary cost saving measure.
