The Chair of the local authority’s housing committee is calling for a change in Government policy to allow for compulsory inspections of private rental properties.
It comes as the latest figures from the local authority shows almost 90% of private rented homes inspected by Clare County Council last year failed to meet the required standards.

The council inspected close to 500 houses in 2017 where tenants were on schemes like HAP and found that 434 were not compliant for a variety of reasons.
It represents a slight improvement on 2016 figures but despite this, Shannon Councillor Gerry Flynn says that it’s not enough.
