Calls For Increased Supports For Travellers During COVID-19 Crisis

Clare County Council and the Government are being called on to provide increased supports for the Travelling community during the COVID-19 crisis.

A number of encampments are located around Ennis and other parts of the county, where families are living in cramped conditions in mobile homes and caravans.

This is leading to concern among some members of the community about meeting their hygiene and health needs, during this pandemic.

In response, Clare County Council says it’s working closely with the HSE Traveller Health Unit and making arrangements to put in place sanitation and water for occupants.

John lives on the roadside on the outskirts of Ennis and has underlying health conditions and says he, and many like him, are concerned about contracting the virus and the risk of passing it on.

Clare County Council statement

The Council is working closely with the HSE Traveller Health Unit to cater for the needs of the Traveller community at this difficult time. In this regard we are making arrangements to put in place sanitation and water for the occupants of this particular site, this does not negate the fact that this site remains an unauthorised site. However, this response is necessary, in this unprecedented time to manage the spread of COVID-19.
