Calls For Urgent Action On “Unsightly Shannon Banks”

It’s claimed the waterways of Shannon Banks have been severely neglected by the agencies responsible for their upkeep.

Waterways Ireland came under fire from local stakeholders at Clare’s Tourism Strategic Policy Committee this week.

Waterways Ireland is responsible for the restoration, develop and promotion of 1,100km worth of inland waters nationwide.

Local representatives, have accused the body of avoiding their duty, however, particularly in the South-East of the county.

Sinn Féin Councillor James Ryan has frequently requested the installation of a jetty in Shannon Banks along with the removal of overhanging trees, weeds, and overgrowth.

He claims Waterways Ireland have been almost impossible to contact.

Updates were also issued at the meeting on the status of the Shannon Greenway.

The 43km project is expected to be completed in four stages, with Waterways Ireland telling the SPC this week that a planning application will be submitted shortly.

Parteen farmer Tom Lane says it’s inexcusable that local landowners haven’t been informed of preferred routes.
