A private jet was forced to return to Shannon Airport this afternoon several hours after initially departing.
The Bombardier CL-600 jet, using its aircraft registration N208QS as its callsign, departed Shannon at 12.57pm.
The flight, which was travelling to Teterboro in the US state of New Jersey, turned around over the North Atlantic and returned to the Midwest airport. It’s understood the crew reported a technical issue.
The flight was cleared to descend to 12,000 feet while still 300 kilometres from Shannon. The crew advised air traffic controllers that they would need to hold for up to 60 minutes to burn off fuel before making an approach to land.
At around 3.55pm, the jet entered a holding pattern over East Clare to burn off fuel to ensure they touched down within safe landing weight limits. Shortly after 4.30pm commenced an approach to Shannon before landing safely at 4.37pm.
The circumstances of the diversion have not been confirmed.
