Applegreen Plans for M18 Service Station as Council Zones for Another.

The Mayor of Ennis insists a new major plan for the town has not been led by developers.

The Draft Ennis and Environs Local Area Plan sets out a strategy to develop the town over the coming years, and includes plans for extra housing, expanded schools as well as a new road and pedestrian bridge.

It also outlines plans for a crematorium on the outskirts of the town on the Kildysart Road, and for a motorway service adjacent to the M18.

Applications for developments along these lines have been submitted in recent months, Councillors had even rejected plans for the crematorium, but Councillor Johnny Flynn insists careful consideration has gone into the new document.

Meanwhile, a separate application has been made for a second service station alongside the county's busiest road.

Applegreen Service Areas Ltd. has submitted an application to Clare County Council, seeking permission to demolish an existing 100 sq. metre building near the N18 at Latoon, Dromoland.

They're looking to construct a petrol station with  a shop, restaurant, parking and other associated services.

Clare County Council is due to make a decision in March.

Next month, the local authority is also due to decide on a separate application by Supermacs founder Pat McDonagh for a different serivce station adjacent to Junction 12 of the M18 on the outskirts of Ennis.
