Consultants acting on behalf Trump's Doonbeg Golf Resort warned about consequences for the business if permission wasn't secured for their planned 200,000 tonne wall of rock armour.

It's aim is to prevent the golf course from being washed away by Atlantic storms, but the project was criticised by environmentalists who said it would harm dunes there.

Permission to construct the project had been sought from Clare County Council, who have now referred it onto An Bord Pleanála.

The proposed wall is 2.8km in length, requiring the Council to refer the application to the national authority who will determine whether it is strategic infrastructure.

If it is, then An Bord Pleanala and not the Council will decide on the application.
