A new ALDI store in Killaloe has been given the green light.
An Bord Pleanala has granted planning permission for the single story discount food store on Abbey Street in the town, subject to a number of conditions.
Clare FM’s Fiona McGarry reports:
An Bord Pleanala granted planning permission for a new ALDI in the town.
Construction is due to get underway next year on a single-storey development on Abbey Street, which will include 87 car parking spaces and associated signage.
The store was orignally granted planning permission by Clare County Council in May this year, but this was appealed to the planning authority by a number of locals who raised concerns over the impact on existing businesses.
But the planning appeals authority have now upheld the Council’s decision, subject to a number of conditions including that a revised site layout plan be submitted before development begins and that an archaeological appraisal be facilitated.
In a statement to Clare FM, a spokesperson has welcomed the decision saying they believe “competition is food for consumers” and that ALDI will move forward with plans to open the Killaloe Store.
It goes on to say that ALDI is “engaged in a three year €100 million expansion programme, with plans to open 20 new stores and creating 400 new jobs by the end of 2019.
