Works to improve accessibility at Ennis Railway Station are due to get underway in the coming months.

Irish Rail has outlined it’s committment to the station, and has also promised to improve maintenance at the station.

It’s after a former Mayor of Clare outlined his disgust over the appearance of the station, which is the first impression for many arriving into the county town.

Clare FM’s Ben Sweeney reports:

Councillor Pat Daly has described the site adjacent to Ennis Train Station as an “eye sore” greeting tourists and commuters visiting Ennis.

His issue, and that of other Councillors, is with the derelict site owned by Iarnród Éireann which he’s likened to a field in the West of Connemara.

He’s calling on Clare County Council and Irish Rail to come together to come up with an enhancement programme for the area, saying it’s appearance will colour tourists’ perception of the county town when they arrive here.

Councillor Daly has even suggested a statue of Percy French, who parodied the West Clare rail system in the famous song, ‘Are Ye Right There Michael?’

Irish Rail insists it’s committed to improving the site.

As part of summer works, grass cutting will begin next week and will continue until September, while plans are in place to carry out works to improve acesibility in the coming months.

Irish Rail Spokesperson Barry Kenny also says that while a lack of funding is an obstacle in improving the station, efforts are underway to benefit customers there.
