There has been a significant spike in the level of overcrowding at the region’s main hospital today.

The latest figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation show there were 86 patients waiting for beds at University Hospital Limerick this morning, 52 of those on trolleys in the ED.

It follows an appeal from the UL Hospitals Group to the public to consider all options before attending the ED including GP, GP out of hours service and the Injury Unit at Ennis General Hospital.

ULHG say they’re still experiencing very high volume of patients attending and that as part of their escalation plan, additional ward rounds, accelerated discharges and the transfer of patients is underway.
