Six-year-old Saorlaith Ruane from Shannon has cerebral palsy and mobility difficulties but loves to get on her custom-built tricycle for exercise.

But her bike recently broke, and due to the nature of the damage, a specialist was required to repair it, which her family found difficult to source.

Saorlaith’s mother Beth Hickey says the bike has been crucial, particularly in recent months, as the six-year-old had no access to much-needed physio during the pandemic.

But local Gardaí in Shannon came to the rescue, after managing to source a specialist who repaired the tricycle free of charge.

Inspector Paul Slattery from Shannon Garda Station says there was nothing more rewarding than seeing the delighted look on Saorlaith’s face, as she cycled around once again.

Saorlaith says she was sad when her bike wasn’t working and she’s now thanking Gardaí for being her frontline hero in her time of need.
