Moneypoint’s Station Manager says as many as 500 construction jobs will be created in West Clare by the building of a major new base for renewable energy there.

The ESB has today announced details of its 5 billion euro ‘Green Atlantic At Moneypoint’ project, which aims to transform the West Clare plant into a green energy hub that would have the potential to power more than 1.6 million homes nationwide.

An offshore wind farm is to be developed off the coasts of Clare and Kerry, with Moneypoint to become a centre for the construction and assembly of floating wind turbines.

The utility also plans to invest in a green hydrogen production, storage and generation facility by 2030.

Station Manager of the West Clare plant, Sean Hegarty, says there are options being presented to government regarding the plant’s use after its burning of coal ceases in 2025, and before the renewable energy base is operational.
