17.50

Returning Officer Rita Considine taking charge of her first General Election in Clare is expected to take to her feet in the coming moments as the first count is understood to be imminent.

The top four according to the tallies is Timmy Dooley with over 11,000 FPVs, Cathal Crowe with over 8,200, Joe Cooney with over 7,600 and Donna McGettigan of Sinn Féin who’s polling over 7,500.
Leonora Carey is the nearest of the chasing pack and is running over 2,281 votes behind the top four, Roisín Garvey of the Greens in 6th lies a further 1,500 votes back.
According to the tallies, Clare’s valid poll is 60,356 , this means our quota should be 12,072 votes, so we shouldn’t be expecting anyone to get elected on the first count.
It’s unlikely on the second count too as Barry O’Donovan of Rabharta and Michael Loughrey of the Irish People’s transfer’s won’t be enough to make the difference once they’re eliminated.
Across all 20 candidates in Clare, Fianna Fáil has taken 38% of the share, Fine Gael 25%, Sinn Féin 12% and Greens 6%.

17.40

The quota is expected to be 12,072 based on an estimated valid poll of 60,356 (Estimated voter turnout 62%).

17.20

We aren’t expecting results for the first count until after 6pm.

17.00

Clare FM’s Election Trivia
– Clare has not returned two FF and FG candidates since 2007 , this has also only happened in 4 of Clare’s 35 elections to date
–  The last time Clare returned a Sinn Féin TD other than Violet Anne Wynne was 1921 when all 4 candidates were SF and unopposed
– The last time a candidate outside FF,FG, SF or IND was elected in Clare was Michael MC for Labour in 2011
–  The last time Joe Cooney didn’t exceed the quota on the first count or top the poll of an election was 2004 , he was elected on the 4th count and last over the line in the now defunct Scariff constituency, Pat Hayes topped the poll then
– June Dillon Aontú hoping to be Cooraclare’s first TD since Brendan Daly finished his term in 2002
– Hilary Tonge is Clare’s first ever Soc Dems candidate
– In Clare’s last GE , all 4 candidates were elected on the last count, this has never happened before or since
– Clare hasn’t elected a candidate on the first count since 1982, when Brendan Daly and Bill Loughnane of FF both made it
Notable Poll Toppers
– Donal Carey in 1989 with 19.7%
– James Breen (IND) in 2002 with 19.5%
– Brendan Daly in 1981 with 24% elected on first count

– The last time Clare elected a woman in successive elections was Síle DeValera who retained her seat over five elections between 1987 and 2002 Madeline Taylor Quin achieved the same feat in 3 elections between 1982 and 1989.
Unlikely Winners
– In 1927 , Patrick Houlihan of Fianna Fáil took the last seat after finishing 8th in First Preference Votes
– In 1923 , Brian O’Higgins Republican Party took the second seat after finishing 14th in first preference votes

16.30

Final Tally Summary

16.00

There’s mounting tension here in the Island Convention Centre in the West County now that all 180 boxes have been tallied.

Fianna Fáil’s Timmy Dooley is on course to top the poll with 11,041 votes but it looks as if he’ll remain just shy of the quota in the first count based on tallies. That quota is expected to be above 12,000.
Behind him are fellow Fianna Fáil candidate Cathal Crowe on 8,264, Fine Gael’s Joe Cooney on 7,636 and closely following him is Sinn Féin Councillor Donna McGettigan with 7,509 votes.
Outside of the top four, we have Fine Gael’s Leonora Carey with 5,228, Green Senator Róisín Garvey on 3,636 and Fianna Fáil Councillor Rita McInerney on 3,469.
As it stands, Timmy Dooley, Cathal Crowe and Joe Cooney are looking safe with Donna McGettigan honing in on the fourth seat but it remains all to play for as we await that much-anticipated first count and transfers could change things to a great extent, particularly in relation to the fourth seat.
Michael Loughrey of the National Alliance and Barry O’Donovan of Rabharta are likely to be the first candidates eliminated, while incumbent Violet-Anne Wynne is set to lose her seat, having accrued just 286 votes.
We’ll have regular updates here on Clare FM throughout the day to keep our listeners informed, and we’ll be continuing our live blog on clare.fm, while full live coverage and analysis can be heard from 6pm this evening.

Counting is underway in General Election 2024 in the Clare constituency.

Boxes opened at 9 o’clock this morning at Treacy’s West County Hotel in Ennis.

Over 96,000 people in Clare were eligible to cast their vote in the 2024 General election at the county’s 102 polling stations and early predictions suggest turnout was close to 65%, which is roughly in line with 2020.

This morning, Treacy’s West County Hotel is a hive of activity, where 60 count centre staff, divided into pairs, have been sorting through 180 boxes ahead of the first count, which is expected this afternoon.

Fianna Fáil have been performing well, as has Fine Gael, while Sinn Féin and the Greens are also in the mix.
