Nurses say the level of overcrowding at the region’s main hospital has soared after the bank holiday weekend.

More than 100 patients were on trolleys at University Hospital Limerick this morning, according to INMO figures.

The INMO’s daily latest trolleywatch analysis shows there were 105 patients waiting for beds at University Hospital Limerick during morning rounds, 45 of those on trolleys in the Emergency Department.

The overall figure is three dozen more than the next busiest facility; Cork University Hospital and comes on a day when there were 704 admitted patients waiting for beds at hospitals across the country.

The INMO has said that of the five bank holidays so far this year, there have been out of control numbers of patients on trolleys in the days following, and they insists that this must not be allowed to continue further into the year.

The nurses’ union is calling on senior decision makers in both the HSE and Government to come together to develop a year-round plan to tackle this crisis.
