An elderly woman reported missing in North Clare earlier today has been located safe and well.

A search operation was mounted this evening after the 91-year-old was reported missing by a carer who had called to her home in Lahinch.

Gardaí mounted an initial search and later requested additional support from Clare Civil Defence and the Irish Coast Guard. Civil Defence and Doolin Coast Guard volunteers were alerted at around 7.30pm and mobilised to assist with the search.

Land teams walked through the town while Civil Defence volunteers also launched a drone in an effort to locate the woman.

A local community text alert was broadcast advising residents that a person was missing in the area and requesting locals keep an eye out and report any sightings.

It later emerged that the woman had been in a house in the town and that the homeowner only realised that her visitor may have been the missing woman when she checked her phone and saw the community text message.

Shortly before 10.00pm, once it was confirmed that the woman as safe and well the search operation was stood down. The woman did not require medical attention.
