Gradual Rise In Vacancy In Ennis Town Centre Over Three Years

The rate of vacancy in Ennis Town Centre has seen a gradual rise over a three-year period.

The latest Clare County Council data points to a decline in the use of units for residential purposes and a number of business closures.

Between the years of 2017 and 2022, the local authority carried out an an annual Ennis Town Centre Health Check to assess the use of each ground floor building space in the vicinity.

853 units were recorded as being in use in 2020 but this fell by three to 850 in 2022.

Residential units, of which there were 204, saw a significant drop of just under 5% to 194.

The number of retailers operating in the county town decreased by four to 238, the number of pubs fell by three to 28, two banks closed their doors and one insurance or mortgage broker ceased trading.

The figures also show an increase in vacancy with the number of vacant units up from 123 to 127.

On a more positive note, there were eight more restaurants, cafés and takeaways open in 2022 than in 2020 while the amount of health or medical practices saw a rise of four.

The areas of financial services, legal services, fitness centres and betting offices all saw an increase of one in their type of business.

The number of newsagents, visitor accommodation providers, cinemas, nightclubs, garages, taxi offices and funeral homes meanwhile remained unchanged.
