New figures show the number of vacant beds at University Hospital Limerick has fallen over recent weeks.

There are now 12 vacant general beds and 4 vacant critical care beds in Dooradoyle, around half the amount of two weeks ago.

The number of COVID-19 cases there has fallen too, however.

As of yesterday, the HSE says there were 35 confirmed cases of COVID-19 at University Hospital Limerick, along with a further 26 suspected cases.

The total – 61 – is down from 72 one week ago, and 88 the week before.

10 of the cases in Dooradoyle see patients being treated in critical care beds, one of the highest numbers of any hospital, although that figure did stand at 12 in each of the last two weeks.

The number of vacant beds across the site is falling, down to 16 from 31 a fortnight ago.

There are no figures available on capacity at Ennis in this HSE report.

Last week, UL Hospitals Group CEO Colette Cowan insisted her team are experienced in managing large volumes of patients in normal times, but the system’s ability to cope with the coronavirus influx will now be crucial – in the MidWest, and nationally 0 in that they are experienced in determining how and when restrictions can be eased.
