The Today Show – Wednesday May 23rd

On The Today Show this afternoon Gavin Grace found out about a unique challenge undertaken by a Clare business to walk the circumference of the moon! John Sweeney of the Clare Sports Partnership
Discussed the Clare Moonwalk Challenge, which is part of the Irish Sports Council National Company Challenge. The objective is to increase levels of physical activity among the working population for the month of May. Clare Sports Partnership is the only company in Clare to get involved. They decided to join forces with Clare Local Development Company and the Clare Volunteer Centre (who share the same building as them) and came up with the idea of a walking and cycling the circumference of the moon for the month – a distance of 10,921km! At the end of week 3 Sunday May 20th they have reached in excess of 7,000km! They are also piloting an initiative that has developed through the challenge, named ‘Trading Spaces’. The idea is that workers swap places with other companies in the town and walk/cycle to work from their parking spaces. They are also organising a 4km walk on Monday 28th May at lunch time.  For anyone interested please meet in West Gate Business Park at 1.10pm – the walk should take 40mins.  For details call the Clare Sports Partnership on 065 6865434 or see www.claresportspartnership.ie or call the Clare Local Development Company on 065 6866800 or see www.cldc.ie

Miriam Kerins of the Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCA) joined Gavin on the show to tell you about how a nine-year-old chimp at Dublin Zoo has rescued three baby ducklings from possible danger. “Bossou” spotted the three day old ducks in a nest on the edge of Chimp Island in the Zoo – and became worried that they were in danger. He rescued them from the water and cradled them until zoo authorities became aware of what was going on. He then handed them over – in return for some bananas. The ducklings have now set up home in the DSCPA shelter!

Pauline Crowley from Rehab discussed how you can nominate someone from your area or community for the annual People of the Year Awards. The award is open to one and all, either an individual or a group that has contributed to the life of your local community. For details please see www.peopleoftheyear.com. There is a nominations page on the website which you can use to put forward your nominated individual or group.
