The Today Show – Wednesday June 20th

Clare FM’s Gavin Grace was joined in studio by Denise Dunne of Clare Haven Services for this afternoon’s edition of The Today Show. Denise discussed the seventh annual Clare 10k, which takes place this weekend on Saturday 23rd June – it is Clare Haven Services largest fundraiser every year and contributes significantly in helping the provide services to women suffering from domestic abuse. Clare Haven Services is a voluntary organisation set up in 1993 to provide support, information and refuge accommodation to women and their children who are being abused in their own homes. Science teacher John Sims from Mary Immaculate Secondary School in Lisdoonvarna spoke to Gavin Grace on The Today Show this afternoon to highlight the success of his students at the Northern Ireland BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition. Stephen O’Connell, a 2nd year student from Doolin also spoke to Gavin about he won the best prize in the junior category for his project on lobsters!  Other local winners are Aisling O’Rourke for her project on the effect of exposure on the shape of the shells of dog whelks (Atlantic Dogwinkle), while Rihanna McMahon and Niamh McNamara won a prize for their work on the covering behaviour of sea urchins!  In total five projects from the north Clare school were entered in the competition in Belfast.

John Sweeney of the Clare Sports Partnership joined Gavin Grace on the show ahead of this weekend’s Tour de Buren cycle event. The An Post Tour de Burren, regarded as one of the best leisure cycles in the country and now the third largest in the country, takes place on Saturday next – June 23rd. At their food stop in the Pavillion, Lisdoonvarna, they will be treated to cheesecake, sandwiches, snickers, fruit, tea, coffee, biscuits and much more. Over 20,000 litres of water will be consumed on the day! Organisers would like to remind the public of the times that the cyclists may be passing their doors.  Why not give a cheer.   • 8.30am to 12.00pm – 2,500 cyclists in Ballyvaughan ready for the Tour de Burren
  • All of the main routes will be travelling in the direction of Doolin via Black Head and also returning on the same road.
  • 9.30am – 800+ cyclists depart Ballyvaughan on the162km route. There will be a diversion in Lisdoonvarna to send all traffic via Corkscrew Hill. It is expected that the peloton will arrive in Doolin at approx. 10.20am
  • 11.00am – 1,300+ cyclists depart Ballyvaughan on 66km & 108km routes. There will be a diversion in Lisdoonvarna to send all traffic via Corkscrew Hill. It is expected that the peloton will arrive in  Doolin approx. 12.00pm
  • Between 10.20am and 2.00pm Doolin will be extremely busy with cyclists climbing up to Doonagore Castle Hill.
  • Between 10.20am and 11.30am Cliffs of Moher, Liscannor will be busy with cyclists travelling in the direction of Lahinch.
  • Lisdoonvarna will be busy ALL DAY from 11.20 to 5.00pm.
  • 1.30pm to 3.00pm Corkscrew Hill will have cyclists travelling up it in the direction of Lisdoonvarna. Not big groups. Maybe 4’s and 5’s
  • 2.00pm to 7.00pm Coast road will be busy with cyclist in the direction of Ballyvaughan.

Dr Máire Finn of the Ennis Family Medical Centre joined The Today Show for her weekly medical feature – this week Máire focused on arthritis and related illnesses and conditions. She gave details on ways to relieve or ease symptoms.  She covered Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteo Arthritis and the differences and similarities between the two conditions.  Rheumatoid Arthritis must be treated medically while Osteo Arthritis can be eased by movement.
