The Today Show – Thursday May 3rd

Sean Kelleher, former employee of Vita Cortex in Cork and Shop Steward spoke to Gavin Grace on today’s edition of The Today Show. There’s relief for Vita Cortex workers in Cork this morning – after a redundancy settlement was reached yesterday. Staff have been involved in a sit in at the plant for the past 140 days – and they say they’ll keep going with that until they receive the agreed redundancy payments. The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has paid tribute to the workers – saying they displayed enormous dignity and fortitude. Sean spoke about the support the workers have received from the public at home and abroad and indeed from celebrities like Sir. Alex Ferguson, Christy Moore and Paul McGrath.  He described what life was like for those on the sit-in and thanked everyone for their support over the past 20 weeks.

Majella O’Shea is the Director of Curriculum and Assessment with the NCCA (National Council for Curriculum and Assessment).  She spoke to Gavin Grace about the news that a new course in Chinese Language and Culture for Transition Year students. The unit’s been developed by the UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland and the Irish National Council for Curriculum and Assessment. It’s designed to introduce students to both the traditional and modern aspects of Chinese culture and support those learning the language.

Also on today’s show we heard the next installment of our “Through the Ages series. Today’s pupils from across Clare bring to life memoirs and folklore collected by students 75 years ago as part of an oral history project set in motion by what was then the Folklore Commission in 1937. Children in national schools all over Ireland were asked to gather as much of their local folklore as possible from their elderly family members and neighbours and to write it all down just as they heard it. The West Clare Kidney Walk for Life departs The Square, Kilrush on Sunday 6th May at 3pm sharp.  There will be a reception afterwards in Tubridy’s Bar in Cooraclare.

Stephen McDermott from Clare FM’s 11 to 1 Show joined The Today Show for his weekly cinema review. He previewed the latest cinema releases including American Pie: Reunion, Silent Town and Beauty and the Best 3D.  He also reviewed recently released DVD’s The Iron Lady and Mission Impossible 4.
