The Today Show – Thursday March 8th

On The Today Show – to mark International Women’s Day Gavin spoke to Sharon O’Halloran.  Sharon is the Director of Safe Ireland who offer support services for those affected by domestic violence. Startling figures released to coincide with International Women’s Day reveal that 770 women and children have accessed domestic violence services in a single day. Safe Ireland says it took a snapshot of the situation on November 4th 2011 – the fourth one-day census carried out by the group. Sharon discussed the figures. While Clare FM’s Máire Moynahan joined the show live from Knox’s Bridge in Ennis where people gathered to mark International Women’s Day.  Clare Women’s Network, who organised the event, are urging men and women to join them on the bridge as a mark of solidarity in building bridges of peace and hope for the future.

David Moore, Chairman of Astronomy Ireland spoke to Gavin about an enormous solar flare which is heading toward Earth. It’s thought the flare could disrupt power grids, satellite navigating systems and aeroplane flights. Forecasters at the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Centre say it is the biggest in five years, and growing. David spoke about the event and explained how colourful auroras may be more visible over Ireland’s skies.

11 year old Declan Cairney from Kinvara and his mother Maeve were in studio to discuss Declan’s book “Raptors – A Pocket Guide to Birds of Prey and Owls”. In celebration of Irish raptors, Declan will be launching his at the Burren Birds of Prey Centre at Ailwee Cave in Ballyvaughan on Saturday 10th of March at 11am. The event is to celebrate the enthusiasm and talent of Declan and also the support he has pledged for the Golden Eagle Trust. The day will culminate with a flying display of trained raptors by James Irons, Manager of the Burren Birds of Prey Centre at Ailwee Cave who joined Gavin on the line to talk about the event.

Martina Hynan is a Visual Artist based in Ennis.  She joined The Today Show to discuss her
Exhibition  Re/Imagining Birth at Ennistymon’s Courthouse Gallery and how it ties in with International Women’s Day. Martina also discussed Natural Traditions – a documentary which will also be screened at the Gallery tonight at 8pm. “Natural Traditions” is a film documenting the history of community midwifery in Ireland, and its uncertain future. This work imagines how birth was seen through the eyes of women in Ireland before medical intervention became the norm.
