The Afternoon Show – Thursday October 18th 2012

Today on The Afternoon Show Gavin Grace was joined by Patricia Conboy, Director of Older & Bolder. Older & Bolder is today, at the gates of Dáil Éireann, presenting signatures to a petition to Government calling for the immediate reversal of cuts to Home Help and Home Care Packages.  Patricia Conboy, said, “Those in receipt of home help services are small in number but their response to the cutting of vital supports is loud and clear. In the words of one Dublin woman, “I could not survive at home without home help because I have severe and very disabling arthritis. Any cuts to this service would put my health and safety in jeopardy. These are cuts too far”

Mags Naughton is a Clinical Liaison Nurse with the Jack & Jill Foundation in Clare. She spoke to the show about how the foundation has launched a national appeal to help it raise an urgent €400,000 shortfall in funds required to run its service to the end of the year. The Foundation, which provides intensive home nursing care, funding and support to the families of children under four years old with brain damage, has been severely hit by the recession, a slowdown in the mobile phone recycling market and a reduction in its HSE grant.

Aine Purcell, Chairperson of Ennis Tidy Towns Committee  also discussed how just weeks after picking up the Tidiest Large Urban Centre Award in the National Tidy Towns Competition, Ennis has been shortlisted for the inaugural Tourism Towns Award, alongside Ballyvaughan. The overall winner will be announced by Fáilte Ireland in November and will receive a €10,000 grant towards developing itself as a tourism destination.
