The Afternoon Show – Thursday November 29th 2012

On The Afternoon Show today Gavin Grace was joined by Yvonne Doris, Scientific Officer with the Environmental Protection Agency to discuss the resukts of a new report. The EPA Drinking Water Report for 2011shows that public water supplies continue to improve; private wells are a growing cause for concern as instances of VTEC double. The quality of public water supplies serving 80% of the population continues to improve.  The number of E.coli exceedances are down by almost 90% since 2005. Private wells are a growing cause for concern.  Instances of VTEC (a harmful strain of E. coli which may lead to kidney failure) have doubled in the last year.  Contaminated well water can be a source. EPA asks all owners of wells and those not on public supplies to check water sources

There was great excitement in the village of Barefield last evening, when a number of Munster stars visited the local clinic of Clare Crusaders. The group, which provides much needed therapy to Children with Special Needs and relies entirely on the public’s support for funding, has been chosen by Munster rugby as one of it’s charities of the year. After the event, which was attended by Clare players Luke O’Dea and Damien Varley, as well as Keith Earls and Mike Sherry, Gavin caught up with head of Clare Crusaders Ann Norton who told him about the importance of this arrangement.

Maria Moynihan Lee also joined the show to discuss this year’s Galway Continental Christmas Market. The annual Christmas market at Eyre Square runs until December 22nd and a park and ride service starts this weekend. For details see http://www.galwaychristmasmarket.ie/
