Joining Clare FM’s Gavin Grace on the Afternoon Show today was Dr. Lisa O’Connor from the Food Safety Authority of Ireland. There’s been a 118 per cent increase in cases of farm related e-coli in the last year. Figures from the Food Safety Authority show there were 251 cases of the strain, known as “verotoxigenic e-coli” in 2011, but this rose to 547 in 2012. Sarah Keogh is a Dietician with the Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute. She discussed how the average person puts on half a stone over the festive period. The Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute say many of us clock us as much as 6,000 calories on Christmas Day alone. But the joyous overeating is often followed by strict resolutions to shift the weight in the New Year.

David Moore, Chairman of Astronomy Ireland joined the show to pay tribute to Astronomy Ireland member Sir Patrick Moore, who passed away at the weekend. He inspired the world’s astronomers to take up the hobby as their profession and countless millions of ordinary people to look skyward in his nine decades on this planet.
