The Afternoon Show – Friday November 23rd 2012

On The Afternoon Show today, John Comer, the President of the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association (ICMSA) joined Gavin from Brussels. The ICMSA says the EU Budget negotiations which have just started will decide the viability of Irish farming for the next decade and John Comer says “the Taoiseach must stand national ground and defend the CAP against budget cuts designed to appease others”.  He also says the negotiations underway in Brussels will ultimately decide the shape and viability of Irish farming for the next decade and the hope and aspirations for the State’s ‘Food Harvest 2020’ are largely dependent on the Taoiseach’s ability to stand with France and others and defend the CAP budget against attacks from the coalition headed by Britain.

Aine Fitzgerald, a journalist with the Limerick Leader also spoke to Gavin following the news that a new school in Limerick will open as normal today after a dispute with subcontractors. As class ended yesterday at Kilfinane primary school – a number of subcontractors arrived and proceeded to remove furniture, fittings and other equipment. Shocked parents prevented them from leaving and last night the school secured a High Court injunction preventing them from taking any property. The dispute ended on foot of the injunction and after commitments on payment from the main contractor.

Colette Ryan is from suicide HeadsUp.  She joined the show to ask the people of Clare if they are looking for the ultimate endurance test and the adventure of a lifetime? Does climbing 17,373-foot in five countries in just three days sound appealing? Headsup is calling on all Clare walkers, trekkers and thrill-seekers to take part in the HeadsUp Five Peaks Challenge, which takes place from 2nd to the 4th August 2013. Participants will climb the five highest peaks in Ireland, Northern Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales on one bank holiday weekend, while at the same time raising money for HeadsUp, Rehab’s youth suicide prevention project!

Gari Deegan, a Singer and Radio DJ from Bunratty and Sarah Griffin of the Ennis Musical Society were in studio with Gavin today to talk about a special fundraiser for a young girl from Galway. Lily Mae Morrison from Claregalway suffers from Stage 4 Neuroblastoma, a rare cancer. 300 Irish singers have come together to perform a version of Elton John’s Tiny Dancer in order to raise funds and awareness. They want to get the single to the Christmas number one spot. The single, which was recorded in Galway and supported by Elton John – is being released on iTunes today. It’s hoped the cover of Elton John’s much-loved hit from 1971 will raise funds for Lily-Mae’s care and for research into her condition.
