Morning Focus opened with a discussion of proposals from Clare County Council to change a number of speed limits around the county. Large numbers of people turned up to a meeting at the local authority offices yesterday, but the issue was deferred as councillors review the recommendations. Gavin was joined by Christine Sharp of the Quilty Action Group, who voiced her concerns about the current speed limit on the approach roads to the town.

Then, there was a debate over the so-called ‘baptism barrier’ in Irish schools. Gavin was joined on the line by Patrick Treacy of ‘Faith in Our Schools’ and by David Graham of ‘Education Equality’.

After that, there was an update on the Disclosures Tribunal which is now examining how much the Department of Justice knew about an alleged plan to smear Garda whistleblower, Sergeant Maurice McCabe.

In his financial advice slot this week, Tommy Corbett gave advice on having a full financial review.

Then, the talk turned to the issue of cancellations of restaurant bookings. Some venues are now implementing a deposit policy. Gavin was joined on the line by Adrian Cummins of the Restaurant Association of Ireland. Listen back below:

The problem of parents having to miss work and lose out on job opportunities due to childcare issues was then discussed. Gavin was joined on the line by Regina Bushell of the Seas Suas organisation who lobby for independent childcare providers.

Frankie Coote, Clare County Dog Warden then called to studio with an update on animal welfare issues.

With hopes of a breakthrough in the campaign to reinstate out-of-hours GP services across the county, Deirdre Culligan of ‘Reinstate Shannondoc’ joined Gavin for an update on a meeting with Dep Joe Carey (FG).

Then, the show heard from Evan Cronin, an Ennis man who is hoping to swim the English Channel for the Make a Wish Foundation. He’s holding a swimathon on February 4 at the Ennis Leisure Complex. Listen back below:
