Morning Focus opened with a stinging criticism of our Emergency Departments by one of the country’s leading consultants.

Dr Jim Gray of Tallaght Hospital told Gavin why he believes future generations could look back on the ED overcrowding issue as another national ‘abuse scandal’.

The show also heard criticism of the introduction by the government of plain cigarette packaging. Gavin was joined by John Mallon of Forest Ireland who described the measure as an example of the ‘bully state’.

Switching your mortgage was the topic of Tommy Corbett’s Finance slot, while Prof Neil Robinson of the University of Limerick discussed the fall-out of the banned Catalan independence referendum.

A memorial event for a West Clare woman who died in her mid-twenties from Cystic Fibrosis was the next item on the show. Micheál Talty joined Gavin to speak about Síle Callinan, from Cooraclare. He explained why he’s holding the event in memory of his late fiancée and was joined in studio by Síle’s sister, Anne-Marie. Listen back below:
