Morning Focus – Monday 26/08/19

Monday’s edition of Morning Focus began by talking about a matter which has certainly gotten a lot of people talking.

There has been a huge level of commentary about newly-developed cycle lanes on a 1.2km route linking St. Flannan’s College Roundabout in Ennis with the Kilrush Road.  The Council says the development will encourage more people to cycle, especially students, but local residents in the Clonroadmore and College View/College Grove areas – as well as surrounding estates – aren’t impressed.  Gavin spoke with critic of the plan, Michael Guilfoyle, and Mayor of Ennis Johnny Flynn in a discussion that provoked a big reaction from our listeners.  Listen back to it below, and join us on Tuesday for more on this topic.

Next, Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council Cllr Cathal Crowe (FF) discussed Moneypoint, after he received correspondance on its future from Minister Richard Bruton.  While insisting he is mindful about the climate, Cllr Crowe questioned the wisdom of moving away from coal burning at Moneypoint at this time when there is no alternative power generation method in place.

Next, Clare FM’s James Mulhall reported from the launch of a Shannon Airport Charity Cycle which will see four participants cycle nearly 800km from Shannon to the other main airports of Knock, Dublin and Cork over four days.  You can hear his report here:

After 10:00, Clare’s Crime Prevention Officer Sgt. Triona O’Rourke outlined details of a spate of vehicle break-ins, particularly targeting tradespeople’s vans, during our Garda Focus slot.  Officers are following a definite line of enquiry.

While, next, Conor Horgan of IBAL discussed the findings of their new litter report, looking at coastal areas and other waterways, which has found a significant improvement in the Clare sites surveyed, namely Lahinch and Doolin.

Would you like to work from home?  If so, a meeting in Ennis on Tuesday night may be of help.  It’s being organised by the Ennis Chapter of the Grow Remote movement, that aims to connect employers and employees who are engaged in the remote working space.  The meeting will also hear of a new co-working facility that offers hot desk facilities from the offices of Ennis Chamber.  You can hear our discussion below:

Finally, Clare FM’s Darren Kelly joined Gavin to recap the weekend’s sporting action.
