Morning Focus – Monday 26/03/18

Monday’s Morning Focus welcomed a four-legged guest to studio.

Pat Flynn was joined in studio by Deirde Fahy, a puppy raiser, and Theo, a puppy and trainee guide dog. They came to studio to highlight the fact that Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind are looking for puppy raisers in Clare – particularly in the Ennis and Shannon areas.

To open the show, Martin McMahon, the Clare chair of the ICMSA, joined Pat to discuss the vulture funds swooping in on the farming community. Farmers are at risk of losing their livelihoods as they struggle to pay off loans sold to vulture funds.

Following that, Pat chatted with Tadhg O’Brien, PRO of the Burren Sub Aqua Club about marine protection areas. The aqua club are welcoming the move as a way of protecting our marine resources.

Next, Pat chatted about Pope Francis coming to visit Ireland for the World Meeting of Families in August. Morning Focus listeners also heard from local people on how they feel about the Pope’s visit.

Pat then hosted the ‘Garda Focus’ segment. He was joined by Sergeant Joe Downey, Clare Crimes Prevention Officer.

After that, Pauline Dunne, senior dietitian with ‘Diabetes Ireland’ and the region’s development officer, spoke with Pat about type 2 diabetes and how you could avoid it.

After that, Pat talked to Liam Duggan, director of vehicle testing & enforcement about the RSA issuing a reminder on bus operator regulations.

Then, it was time for the weekly ‘Monday Sports Panel’.

Pat was joined by Clare FM’s Derrick Lynch, and David O’Brien, former Clare Football Selector.

Next, David Rice of the Killaloe Hedge School spoke about his new novel about a courageous priest during WWII. The book was launched last week in Dublin by Oscar nominated film director Lenny Abrahamson.

To round off the show, Dr Michelle Comber of NUIG and director of the Caherconnell Archaeological Field School, joined Pat to talk about excavations in the region and what they have revealed about the lives of medieval royalty and Gaelic nobility.
