Morning Focus – Friday 12/05/17

A packed Friday edition of Morning Focus included a round-up of arts and other events in the Banner County, as well as our regular Friday panel.

The show opened with an interview with Dr Michael Harty, Clare’s Independent TD. He addressed the EU’s Chief Brexit Negotiator, Michel Barnier on behalf of the Rural Alliance yesterday (Thurs. May 11). He told Gavin why he believes there could be some opportunities for this region, if Brexit is handled properly.

Next up for discussion was the issue of maternal inquests. Councillor Mary Howard (FG) has been campaigning, alongside the Elephant Collective, to have all deaths in childbirth investigated. However, at the last minute, this aspect of the Coroner’s Bill (2017) has been blocked by the Minister for Justice. Listen back below:

Controversial remarks by a leading doctor within the HSE has prompted a debate about the number of nurses availing of vaccination programmes. Dr Kevin Kelleher told an Oireachtas committee that offering chocolates was a proven incentive for nurses, but this was rejected by General Secretary of the INMO, Liam Doran, who told Gavin the suggestion was patronising.

The eleventh Burren Food Festival gets underway today (Fri. May 12) in Lisdoonvarna and festival chairperson Birgitta Hedin-Curtin came to studio to chat about it. Listen back below:
