Today’s show began with an interview with Dr. Michael Harty TD.  He chaired an Oireachtas Health Committee meeting on Wednesday, and later met with Minister Harris, in respect of the CervicalCheck scandal.  During the interview, Dr. Harty expressed support for the suggested investigations into the scandal, which will see an initial “scoping exercise”, conducted by an international expert, likely followed by a Commission of Investigation.

Now, it’s been on the cards for some time, but this week the sugar tax has been introduced. It’s hoped it will play an important part in tackling Ireland’s obesity crisis. The levy on sugary drinks comes into effect today – with people paying 30 cent more per litre. 1 in 4 children here are currently overweight or obese. Gavin heard from Laura Erskine, Head of Community at Mummypages.ie, on the issue as well hearing the thoughts of people on the streets of Clare.

The final hour of the show saw a lot of live music as musicians Mickey Dunne, Oliver O’Connell and Eoin O’Neill joined Gavin in studio to play some tunes and chat about an event in celebration of Traveller music in aid of RNLI. The unique concert celebrating is being held out-doors in Caherconnell Fort in the Burren. The event will take place on Saturday May 5 at 7:30 pm. Booking is available directly from the Fort.

Before our second round of live music, we looked forward to Sunday’s Newmarket-on-Fergus Agricultural Show.  It will be held on Sunday and includes a magnificent dog show, cattle and horse competitions, bouncy castles, food stalls, trade stands, vintage cars and tractors, and more.
