Morning Focus began today with Deputy Michael Harty who told us all about the new outpatients medical centre department at Ennis General Hospital which is set to move to the Kilrush Road. 

Clare County Council have granted planning permission for the conversion of a retail warehouse into a newly-developed facility.

Louis Fay of St Francis Credit Union, Ennis spoke about credit unions entering the mortgage market. There will now be a lot more choice for people looking to get mortgages.

Derek McKay, Managing Director, Adare Human Resource Management shed some light on the jobs trend report on employment issues in the MidWest which recently launched in Shannon. The HR Barometer published by Adare Human Resource Management demonstrates that employees are seeking pay rises and are willing to change jobs to secure a higher pay packet.

In the second hour of the show Tommy Corbett of Carey Corbett Financial Services gave his ‘Financial Advice’ segment.

Donal Ó Lionsigh told us about the review of Irish language exemptions which has highlighted whether Irish should be compulsory or not. The Department of Education are attempting to reduce the number of students who drop Irish in the run-up to the Junior and Leaving Cert exams.

Clare FM’s Ryan Hanton also took to the streets of Ennis to discover what people thought about making Irish optional for the Leaving Cert.

CEO of Dyslexia Association of Ireland, Rosie Bissett spoke to Gavin about new research which shows teachers need more help in supporting dyslexic students. Teachers feel that unidentified dyslexia damages a child’s self-esteem and mental health and that early screening should be made available to all students.

The second hour concluded with regular segment ‘Animal Welfare’. Clare County Dog Warden Frankie Coote was in studio to discuss the latest developments in the area.

In the last hour of Morning Focus Cormac McCarthy from Cuimhneamh an Chláir informed us about ‘Making Connections’ which is one of their Listening Room events. A free event supported by The Heritage Council and Clare County Council will be held tonight (October 2) at The Courthouse Gallery & Studios, Ennistymon.

After this, Author Marian Broderick was on the line speaking to Gavin about her new book ‘Bold, Brilliant & Bad’ which features Clare’s Kitty Linnane. The late Kitty Linnane was a significant figure in the success of the Kilfenora Ceilí Band and was heavily involved in the campaign to preserve traditional music.

Deirdre Sinnott, Senior Policy Inspector for the Health and Safety Authority highlighted the importance of implementing safe driving for work practices. The Road Safety Authority will host a free half-day morning seminar on Thursday next (October 5) at Bunratty Castle Hotel on Managing Driving for Work.

Finally, the show ended with Galway man Martin Ward informing us of the three day, 2,000 kilometre journey that he and his wife are undertaking. Martin and his wife Linda have challenged themselves to drive through every county town in Ireland in 32 hours in a 32 year old car. They are hoping to raise €32,000 for West of Ireland heart charity Croí.
