Morning Focus – Monday 23/10/17

On this week’s Morning Focus, we started off with some good news with a welcome jobs boost for Ennis and were joined first by Frank Keane General Manager of Vitalograph Ireland.

Vitalograph on the Gort Road will open a new software centre today (Mon. Oct 23).

Town Councils were abolished three years ago, meaning fewer representatives on the ground taking care of a wider area. However, after a Dáil vote, the re-instatement of Town Councils could happen in the near future. Gavin discussed whether Town Councils are needed with Councillor Ian Lynch, IND member of West Clare Municipal District Office and former member of Kilrush Town Council and Councillor Mary Howard, Fine Gael member of Ennis Municipal District Office and former member of Ennis Town Council.

We discussed the possible rail strikes that are expected to take place before Christmas. Members of SIPTU and the NBRU have voted overwhelmingly in favour of industrial action. Killaloe area councillor and NBRU member, Tony O’Brien spoke more on the situation.

Then, Director of Quilty-based Wild Irish Seaweed, Evan Talty spoke about the ten new positions that will be created and the future developments for the company.

More on success of Clare-based businesses, L&M Keating, a Kilmihil-based building and civil engineering company was shortlisted for the prestigious award of Irish Industry Entrepreneur of the Year.
Louis Keating, managing director of L&M Keating spoke to Gavin about the company’s growth which has been thirty years in the making.

This October Bank Holiday Weekend will see the 6th Annual Year of Burren Food Fayre, with its theme #WildAtlanticFood. This is a great opportunity for local producers to showcase their produce, also including a Foraging Walk, a screening of an eco film ‘Atlantic’ along with food stalls and demonstrations.
Oonagh O’Dwyer of Wild Kitchen, Lahinch, will be holding the Foraging Walk and spoke to Gavin in studio about the Fayre.

Being in a ‘decade of centenaries’ with the commemorations of landmarks in the 20th century,
President Michael D Higgin’s has said that the most difficult commemorations for Ireland were still to come. We had Dr Pádraig Óg O Ruairc and Dr Tomás MacConmara on the show to discuss this further.
