Leo Varadkar has been elected as the new leader of Fine Gael.

The Social Protection Minister has beaten Minister Simon Coveney to succeed Enda Kenny, even though it was the Corkman who polled strongest amongst party grassroots members.

However, Minister Varadkar won the Councillors’ vote, and then secured 51 of the 73 parliamentary party votes to secure nearly 60% of the weighted vote under the party’s electoral college system.
