Management at the region’s main hospital are being accused of putting patient care at risk by willfully letting trolley numbers spiral out of control.

A record 81 patients were left waiting on trolleys at University Hospital Limerick yesterday, the highest figure ever recorded at any hospital in the country.

An escalation policy was implemented at the hospital to relieve pressure on the emergency department, with measures including moving patients to other hospitals within the group carried out.
