A new study from NUI Galway has discovered that sanitary wipes are contributing to microplastic pollution in our coastal waters.

The study conducted research in three locations, including Bell Harbour in North Clare, where it found that the amount of microplastic fibres was a quarter of the level at Mutton Island in Galway City.

There, it was found that over 90% of microplastics were linked with sanitary products or wet wipes, while the report also found that half of wipes labelled ‘flushable’ were not biodegradable.

Co-author of the report Oisín O’Briain says there needs to be more regulation around labelling for wet wipes.
