The fate of 1,200 Leaving Cert students around the Banner County has been revealed today.

The two-month wait for the results of their June exams has come to an end, with maths once again proving to be a tough challenge.

Clare FM’s James Mulhall has this report from St Caimin’s School in Shannon:

A relieved and happy Conor McMahon from St Caimin’s Community School in Shannon there, who exceeded his expectations in his Leaving Cert exams.

Conor’s three H1 grades and three H2 virtually guarantee his path to study maths in Cork.

He’s one of 113 school-leavers in the school, who are among over 1,200 who have received their resutls around Clare today.

His proud mother Anne says it’s a deserved achievement.

This year is the second year of the new marking system, which sees numerical grades offered instead of the traditional ABC method.

And the results also show that maths is continuing to prove a challenge for schools around the country.

Almost 4,000 of the 57,000 getting results in Ireland today have failed maths – that works out as around 10 percent of all of those who sat the Ordinary Level paper.

But St Caimin’s Principal Claire Knight says now is a time for celebration and it’s important not to dwell.

And while there will be tears of joy and sadness today as they digest the outcome of their exams, focus is now turning to tonight. The class of 2018 in Shannon are still taking it all in:

Thoughts are now turning to celebrations, and ahead of that the Clare Youth Service is urging young men and women to celebrate responsibly.

CYS is holding a number of events at their offices in Ennis, Shannon and Kilrush today providing supports for school leavers.

Jean Tierney says people should enjoy the occasion, but she insists that safety should be a priority.
