Reason Behind Shannon Air Traffic Control Failure Still Unclear

The Irish Aviation Authority say they still don’t know what caused the air traffic control system in Shannon to fail yesterday evening.

There were virtually no flights in the air west of the capital last night due to the major technical issue, which is still under investigation.

Flight schedules have been back to normal since early this morning, as Clare FM’s James Mulhall reports.

While there is normality today, last night saw chaos in the skies over Ireland.

A technical issue with the air traffic control system at Ballycasey, near Shannon, saw an unusual sight on flight tracking websites and radar screens – no planes in the skies over most of the country.

Services at Shannon and Cork were suspended, and the disruption lasted around three hours.

Managing Director of Shannon Airport, Andrew Murphy explains how they first learned of the problem.

The Irish Aviation Authority is continuing to investigate the incident but as of now, say they do not know what caused the ATC system to fail.

A backup system was put in place last night and is still being used.

The IAA’s Philip Hughes says efforts will continue today to try and identify what happened.
